A TREE-MENDOUS Christmas has taken root in Rugby as town centre businesses supported an eco-friendly initiative to promote sustainable pot-grown Christmas trees.
Sustainable products shop Wild and Free, with support from Rugby First, supplied trees to local businesses which will be collected and returned to the nursery at the end of December – where they will be looked after free of charge for the next twelve months.
The trees offer people an alternative to artificial or real ones, helping to reduce carbon footprints and landfill waste while having a ‘real live tree’ at the centre of their Christmas celebrations.
Businesses which took part include The Rugby Hotel, Annexe Studios, Stella Interiors, Winter Wonderland, Eliza Doolittle, Hills Goldsmiths, Mala Beds, Don’t Tell Mum, Distinktion, Terracotta, Rugby Electrical, Bags 4 You, Jeans Flowers, Shine A Light, The Copper Tree, Wild and Free and The Scrum.
Wild and Free owners Charles and Ceri said: “We see this tree rental scheme as a natural extension to our sustainable and eco refill service as it gives customers another means to reduce their environmental impact.
“With around seven to eight million trees thrown away each year after a few short weeks over Christmas, we partnered up with a local nursery to launch this scheme last year. We would like to thank Rugby First for their help and support with this initiative this year.”
“While recycling tree services do reduce the environmental impact of millions of trees being sent to landfill, we believe that re-using the trees for multiple years is far more sustainable – plus it keeps people appreciating that they are using a living resource at a time that celebrates new life.
“Among the three environmental pillars of Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, renting your Christmas Tree is the embodiment of Reuse.”
Shoppers can win a £50 town centre voucher by posing with one of the trees and sharing photos via Rugby First’s social media channels.
Rugby First Business Director Linda Lowne said: “The colourful and beautifully decorated trees not only add to the Christmas shopping experience for customers but also create a talking point, with a chance to win some vouchers and support your local businesses this Christmas.”
