EU analysis helps to show previous garments into new, high quality merchandise, aiming to cut back textile waste and make recycled textiles the norm.
In a manufacturing facility in Waregem, north-west Belgium, a singular piece of equipment accessible solely by fingerprint to trusted employees, is reworking previous clothes and textiles with the utmost precision, away from prying eyes.
Stretching 170 meters, the machine gently untwists woven and knitted fibers, getting ready them for reuse. These fibers are on the coronary heart of a four-year analysis initiative referred to as tExtended to rework the way forward for textile recycling.
The motivation is obvious: every year, 7 million tons of textile waste find yourself in European landfills or incinerators, based on the European Atmosphere Company.
There is just one such machine in the entire world, identified Koen De Ruyck, common supervisor of PURFI Manufacturing, an organization pioneering sustainable textile “rejuvenation.”
“If you’re a visitor to our factory, you only see what goes in and what comes out,” he mentioned. “Most of the technology operates within a black box, to keep the process as secret as possible.”
Unlocking upcycling
The method is known as “soft mechanical recycling.” As a substitute of shredding or tearing cloth to collect fibers, this course of unravels the fabric so the fibers maintain their energy and size.
