Something has shifted inside America’s schools that goes beyond pandemic recovery or budget shortfalls. Families are quietly making different choices, students are checking out in ways that don’t always show up in attendance reports, and the teachers at the front of the classroom are burning out at rates that would have seemed extraordinary a decade ago. The result is a public school system under strain from multiple directions at once.
Between fall 2019 and fall 2023, public school enrollment fell from 50.8 million to 49.5 million, a loss of more than 1.2 million students. That decline isn’t abstract.
