Some of the most recognizable songs in modern music history were not the product of months in the studio or endless rewrites. They arrived almost fully formed, sometimes during a soundcheck, sometimes in a half awake haze, sometimes because a group of musicians got bored waiting for food to arrive. What follows are seven documented cases where a song came together in under ten minutes, backed by the accounts of the artists themselves.

Paul McCartney has told this story many times, and the details rarely change. McCartney is said to have composed the melody in a dream while staying at the family home of Jane Asher in Wimpole Street, London, and the melody came to him fully formed, although he was initially unsure of its originality. He kept humming it to friends just to make sure he hadn’t unconsciously lifted it from an old jazz standard he’d heard as a kid.

The lyrics took a bit longer to arrive, but the musical bones of the song were there almost instantly. He recalled that once he was awake and realized he had something special in mind, he “kind of fell out of bed and the piano was right there to the left of my bed and I just sort of thought well I’ll try and work out how this song goes.” That midnight scramble eventually became the most covered song in recorded history.
