Hollywood has always rewarded actors who disappear into a role, and sometimes that disappearing act happens to the body itself. Over the decades, a handful of performers have starved themselves, binged on junk food, or piled on muscle to a degree that left doctors, directors, and even fellow cast members uneasy. What follows are six well-documented cases where the line between craft and self-harm got uncomfortably thin.
Christian Bale and the near-starvation diet for The Machinist

Christian Bale’s transformation for the 2004 psychological drama The Machinist remains one of the most extreme documented cases in modern film. To play an emaciated, sleep-deprived factory worker, he came down to 110 lbs from 173 lbs for this role, and reports describe his diet as little more than an apple, black coffee, and a tin of tuna a day.
The toll went beyond appearance. As reported by GQ Australia in May 2020, Bale wanted to lose even more weight and get down to 100 lbs, but the film’s producers intervened for fear that it would cause the actor long-term health issues. Nutrition experts have since pointed out that this kind of extreme calorie restriction carries genuine dangers, since cutting out food groups can result in nutritional deficiencies, which can lead to side effects like hair loss, compromised immune systems, and weakened bones.
