Long before red carpets and platinum records, a surprising number of famous faces spent their days grading papers, running gym classes, or standing in front of a chalkboard. Teaching has quietly shaped more entertainment careers than most people realize, giving future stars patience, stage presence, and a paycheck while they figured out what came next.

Here are five celebrities whose path to fame ran through the classroom first, backed by the stories they and reliable outlets have shared over the years.

Before he became the fire breathing bassist of KISS, Gene Simmons stood in front of a room full of sixth graders. Simmons held a brief stint as a sixth-grade teacher in Spanish Harlem, followed by a job as an assistant at the Puerto Rican Interagency Council. He earned the credentials for the job legitimately too, since he graduated from Richmond College in Staten Island with a BA in Education in 1970.

The classroom didn’t hold him for long. He worked as a teacher for about six months, later stating that he quit because he realized his real desire was to perform on stage for a large audience. In his own words, he wanted an audience bigger than a single classroom could ever offer, and within a few years he had exactly that with KISS.

Sheryl Crow’s first job after college wasn’t in a recording studio, it was in an elementary school music room. Fresh out of the University of Missouri at Columbia in the early 1980s, Sheryl Crow taught music for a few semesters at Fenton, Missouri’s Kellison elementary school. Teaching younger kids the basics of rhythm and song gave her steady footing while she quietly built a music career on the side.

The schedule actually worked in her favor. The gig provided Sheryl with time flexibility via long holiday breaks and whole summers off to work on her own music and to hone her voice as a singer of commercial jingles. Those jingle sessions eventually opened doors that led to session work with major artists, setting up the solo career that would bring her nine Grammy Awards.

3. Hugh Jackman worked as a gym teacher in England

Years before he put on the claws as Wolverine, Hugh Jackman spent a gap year working at a British boarding school. Hugh Jackman worked as a gym teacher at Uppingham School in England back in 1987. Other accounts describe his role slightly differently, noting that Business Insider describes him as a gym teacher there, while PEOPLE notes that he also worked as a teaching assistant at the British boarding school.

The experience clearly left an impression on him, and apparently on his students too. In 2013, Jackman went viral after recognizing a former student during a red-carpet event, asking, “How was your education?” It’s a rare full-circle moment, a former teacher turned movie star running into a former pupil under the flash of paparazzi cameras.

4. Brendan Gleeson spent over a decade as a schoolteacher

Unlike some stars who taught briefly before their big break, Brendan Gleeson committed years to the profession. Gleeson taught English and Irish at Belcamp College in North County Dublin during the 1980s and remained a schoolteacher until age 35. That’s a remarkably long run for someone who would go on to become one of Ireland’s most respected screen actors.

His acting career didn’t start until well into adulthood, which makes the shift even more striking. He later became known for Braveheart, In Bruges, The Banshees of Inisherin, and the Harry Potter films. Gleeson has often credited his years in education with giving him a grounded perspective that he carried into every role afterward.

5. Billy Crystal worked as a substitute teacher for extra cash

Before he became one of Hollywood’s most familiar comedic voices, Billy Crystal took on substitute teaching to make ends meet while chasing stand up gigs. After graduating with a Bachelor of Fine Arts from NYU in 1970, he worked as a substitute teacher while pursuing stand-up gigs. Other reporting places the job specifically at his old school, noting that Billy Crystal worked as a substitute teacher at Long Beach Junior High School early in his career for some extra income before breaking out in Hollywood, he revealed on The Kelly Clarkson Show.

Standing in front of unpredictable teenagers turned out to be decent training for live comedy, where reading a room matters just as much. Crystal would go on to headline films like City Slickers and host the Academy Awards multiple times, but those substitute teaching days remain a favorite anecdote whenever the topic of his early career comes up.

Each of these stories follows a similar arc. A talented person needed steady work, found it in a classroom, and used the stability, or sometimes the frustration, to eventually launch into an entirely different kind of spotlight. Teaching didn’t derail any of these careers. If anything, it seems to have sharpened the instincts that made them successful once the cameras and microphones finally showed up.
